After my bridge class, I went to the Richardson library for the couple of hours between my bridge and my tae kwon do. Mostly I read submissions during this time but before I got started, I looked through a book about Mitch Kapor's company that was/is trying to invent a new model of networked personal information manager (Kapor was the founder of Lotus, the company that really kicked off the PC software business before being eaten alive by Microsoft and then acquired by IBM). This was highly interesting to me because I was responsible for a project to develop a networked PIM back in the mid 1990s. Mitch had a lot more high-powered team than I did, and a lot more money but it sounded like he ran into some of the same problems. Software is hard, that's all there is to it. One thing that is funny is so much of what I was trying to do (and sort of made work) is still what people are trying to do. Maybe I just needed a bigger name.
Speaking of software, I was annoyed the other day when I'd uploaded the paperback-ready version of FINDING FUNBOY to my new printer and then they didn't let me order a proof copy (they had the 'order a proof' button but when I clicked it, it gave me the other book I have through them, IN THE WEREWOLF'S DEN as my only choice). I wonder how a feature defect like this could make it through testing? Didn't they even try seeing what happened if someone published more than one book. The books look great so I would think I wouldn't be the only one who'd want to do this. They were quick about responding to my complaint and it's now fixed. I've ordered the proof copy. Once I look it over, I'll send it on to Matt Golec--just for fun.
Didn't get any writing done today--Tuesdays are pretty much used up with my other activities. I did get some submission reading done. Tomorrow I need to get back to editing, writing, and cover design. I'm just about ready for publication on CARPATIAN SHADOWS (a couple of minor tweaks and the cover) so I think I can complete this before heading off to Hawaii on Sunday.
I'm going to make COUNTERFEIT COWBOY by Robyn Anders the www.BooksForABuck.com book of the day. The first of my 'cowboy' series, this cute story tells of a woman who dreams of moving to the country and a man who can't understand her dream. Attraction sometimes strikes in the strangest places. This entire eNovel is only $1--incredible. Learn more, read the exerpt, or buy the entire eNovle here (available in HTML, Adobe PDF, Palm, and Microsoft Reader formats): www.booksforabuck.com/rompages/count_cowboy.html. Here's the cover (cover design by Jane Graves):
