When you work for yourself, weekends don't necessarily mean a lot, but I cut myself some slack today. I'd told myself that if I finished the Golden Pen contest entries I was judging, I would let myself read the new Terry Pratchett book, Making Money. If you read Going Postal, you'll be happy to see Moist von Lipwig back in action with puns, jokes, and a fairy detailed economics lesson. It's not Pratchett's best (so far that distinction belongs to Night Watch, the BooksForABuck.com fantasy book of the year for a few years ago), but it's good. I definitely think his Ankh-Morpork books are his strongest. Here's my review: www.booksforabuck.com/sfpages/sf_07/making_money.html.
Making money has always been an interest of mine. When I was a kid, I tried to make money lending money to my parents. I can't recommend this as a way of getting rich. Later, I picked the payroll route, going with high-tech which was certainly safe (yeah, right). I made decent money but all of the stock options that were supposed to make me rich went underwater. Now I'm an ePublisher which is definitely not the way to wealth. So, it was fun to read about a man who decided to sketch up a bit of his own legal tender and see if people would take it. If you don't know this, you should. Gold is not involved in money.
With MAKING MONEY complete, I'm back to Time's Child by Rebecca Ore--oh, and I did spend a bit of time reading submissions and doing publicity for our latest release, CARPATHIAN SHADOWS (still only $1 but time is running out).
I'm going to make TAMMY AND THE PRIVATE EYE the www.BooksForABuck.com book of the day. Tammy Jones dreams of becoming a detective but her near-terminal shyness prevents her from even applying--until private eye Pete Hunter drags her out of the typing pool because of her resemblance to a movie star who needs a body double. Hunter enjoys a challenge, but turning shy Tammy into outgoing Hollywood celebrity will take every bit of his magic. Of course achieving the impossible creates new problems--problems Hunter hadn't expected. This complete eNovel is only a buck (that $1). Available in HTML, Adobe Acrobat PDF, Palm Reader, and Microsoft Reader formats. Learn more, read the excerpt, or buy the complete novel here: www.booksforabuck.com/rompages/rom_2003/tammy_eye.html. Here's the cover (cover design by Jane Graves):
