Some of the most interesting stories I've ever read have played with time. The Source, by James Michner, for example, zigged back and forth from modern-day archeologists to stone-age man first developing a concept of a deity, through history until the Israeli war of independence. A problem with these stories (including the Michner story) is to keep both the present-day story and the past story compelling. Michner only sometimes did it. In general, the historical story was a lot better.
I just finished reading ATHENA FORCE: VENDETTA b Meredith Fletcher which I enjoyed but which had a bit of the same problem. The part of the story set in the past rocked. The action was hot, the romance was compelling, and the characters were vivid. The present-day was good, but until near the end, the action was slow and for me the romance didn't really grab me as tightly. Still, overall, the story worked and I'm happy to recommend it. Here's my review: www.booksforabuck.com/rompages/rom_2007/athena_force_vendetta.html . Now I'm reading Territory by Emma Bull.
I'm up to page 338 in Remove from Circulation. I should finish it next week. I'm up to page 301 in my edits for Full English Problem. I should finish it this week and publish next week.
My mother is visiting. I took her to my bridge class and it worked out that we needed a fourth so she got to play bridge. Tomorrow, she'll go along with me on my all-day bridge teaching day. I'm afraid I don't show my mother a really active time while she's here--I've got myself really scheduled. Still, I do what I can.
I'm going to make VEIL OF THE GODDESS by Rob Preece the www.BooksForABuck.com book of the day. The discovery of the True Cross in a bombed-out Iraqi mosque threatens to start a countdown to the end-times and a powerful group will stop at nothing to make sure that happens. Sgt. Ivy Newman and Capt. Jake Herrera find themselves fleeing with the Cross as Ivy gradually begins to learn to tap into the Cross's power. A hard-charging thriller--and only $3.99.
