At the Dallas Area Romance Authors meeting today, we had a fascinating talk about witness mis-identification. Because Karen is an addict of true-crime shows, I'm sadly aware of how often witnesses simply mis-identify the actual perpetrator. It was interesting to see some of the scientific data behind what goes on. Especially across racial boundaries, most people are completely blind to identification. We also got to look at some actual police lineups--and saw how easy it would be to select the police-prefered suspect from the list. I like to believe that the vast majority of people in prison are there because they actually committed the crimes for which they were convicted. The more I learn, the more I think that, if this is true, there is a kind providence at work.
Afterwards, we came home and got ready for the meeting of the Winnetka Winos, our neighborhood wine tasting which, tonight, we hosted. We haven't been big on hosting anything, so this was a big deal for us. Karen, in particular, worked hard to pull things together.
I also got an almost instant response from Anthony Perham with his answers to my edits. I need to get the cover complete, but we should be good to go with A Full English Problem early next week.
I finished reading TERRITORY by Emma Bull. Bull is such a wonderful author that you didn't really notice how much of the story proceeded at a really slow pace. The world-building, set in Tombstone in the days leading up to the shootout at OK corral, was compelling. Here's my review: www.booksforabuck.com/sfpages/sf_07/territory.html. I was shocked to see that this is the first SF I've read this month. It seems like I've been busy reading this month--but apparently I've fallen behind. Now I'm reading SNOWBOUND WITH MR. RIGHT by Judy Christenberry.
I'm going to make I, PHILIBERT Q. WINSLOW by Michael Paulson the www.BooksForABuck.com book of the day. When his assistant is found murdered, an attorney becomes the obvious suspect. And every witness who turns up dies almost as soon as they're discovered. Could Winslow be that bad, or is someone playing games with him? Paulson creates a really fascinating story. Only $3.99. Learn more, read the excerpt, or buy the entire eNovel here: www.booksforabuck.com/mystery/mys_06/i-philibert.html. (Available in HTML, Adobe Acrobat PDF, Palm DOC, and Microsoft Reader formats). Here's the cover (cover design by Karen Leabo):
