Karen and I drove out to Frisco today for the book signing. Karen signed books along with five other romance authors while I hung out and provided moral support. The only problem was, an over-energetic Barnes and Noble employee had gone in and stripped all of the books that were supposed to be signed, leaving almost nothing for Karen and the others to sign--and also immediately putting a big negative on their potential sales. The more I see of the paper book industry, the more I believe it is only a matter of time before we all read our books via some sort of electronic device. There are too many steps in the paper process--and at each step something can go wrong. It's hard to believe that things would go wrong in the steps between the book-signing shelf and the book-signing tables so this is one I wouldn't have even thought of, but it's definitely a problem.
While we were out there I finally finished BLOOD AND MEMORY by Fiona McIntosh. I liked the concept and the world-building but found the prose too talky and the characters too whiney. Not terrible, but not as good as it could have been. Here's my review: www.booksforabuck.com/sfpages/sf_05/blood_memory.html . Now I'm reading THE SEVEN HILLS by John Maddox Roberts. I picked this up thinking it would be one of Roberts' SPQR mystery stories but it seems to be an alternate history. Fortunately I like alternate history. This is one reason why I use multiple names for the different types of stories I write, though. And why Nora Roberts does the same thing with her J.D. Robb futuristics. Oh, I also started reading FREEHOLD by Michael Z. Williamson which, so far, seems to be more of a paen to a libertarian society (where everyone carries guns and walks around topless) rather than a story but it's still interesting. This is the book on my Palm so I read it while I'm waiting for other things. (I find my Palm to be the most convenient way to carry stories with me when I'm on the go).
We came home exhausted and pretty much did nothing the rest of the afternoon.
To celebrate Karen's (frustrating) book signing, I'm going to make HOT PROPERTY by Karen Leabo (Kara Lennox) the www.BooksForABuck.com book of the day. What would you do if you were trying to make a living as a professional shopper and the police arrested you for being a diamond thief? Would that change if the arresting cop was a super-sexy guy? That's what Wendy Thayer has to deal with as she tries to build a business helping those too busy or too style-disabled to shop for themselves. Its a great mix of humor, adventure, and romance. Check it out at www.booksforabuck.com/rompages/rom_2004/hot_property.html . Here's the cover.
